Bar Diner? Restaurant Bars and THE CRAWL

My husband and I tend to dine at the bar when we go out.  It's more fun, casual and sometimes you just want a dish or two, one glass of wine and hit the next neighborhood bar. What we like to call THE CRAWL.   Chances are your bartender might end up giving you a taste of a new wine, fun liqueur or help guide you to your next adventure.

CRAWL #1  (UPPER WEST SIDE)

Bar Boulud - (FRENCH) www.danielnyc.com/barboulud.html  Stop here for some Charcuterie and a glass of refreshing white or red.

CHARCUTERIE

Marea - (ITALIAN SEAFOOD) www.marea-nyc.com Move onto an antipasti such as the octopus or a bowl of handmade pasta and a delicious fish entree such as the swordfish or john dory.

LANDMARC Time Warner Center- (AMERICAN) www.landmarc-restaurant.com Finish here at the casual upscale American restaurant run by Marc Murphy (Food Network's Chopped).  A great menu with Italian and French standards with an American twist.  GREAT mussels, steak and onion soup.  Also, a great dessert platter.  NO wines by the glass, only half bottles at great prices!!!  Also open late!

CRAWL #2   (WEST VILLAGE)

Jane Restaurant - (AMERICAN) www.janerestaurant.com Make this be your first stop at their cozy bar and browse their small local beer list and yummy cocktails.  Try the Passion Fruit Cocktail or Dirty Jane while nibbling on some salmon avocado tartare, goat cheese flatbread or truffled gnocchi.

TRUFFLED GNOCCHI

Blue Ribbon Downing Street  BAR - (NEW AMERICAN) www.blueribbonrestaurants.com  Next stop is Downing Street Bar where you can relax with another glass of wine and a few snacks.  They change their menu often, but if they have the chicken wings, GET THEM!!!  It's a tiny place, but worth the wait.

Mas (New American) www.masfarmhouse.com DESSERT STOP!  Chef Catrine Oscarson makes delicious desserts at this elegant and cozy restaurant.  The entire menu is served at the bar, but make sure to have some seasonal desserts from Catrine.  She is the BEST!!

CRAWL #3   (MIDTOWN)

The Modern - (FRENCH-AMERICAN) www.themodernnyc.com This is ONE of the best restaurant bars in the city.  An elegant long bar with a staff and artistic decor.  The Modern is located in the MOMA, so it's perfect after checking out the museum.  Known for their cocktails and wine, the menu gives you free reign on designing your own meal on whether you just want a few dishes or an entire meal.  The Tarte Flambee, Liverwurst (w/ black truffles) and the Alsacian country sausage are delicious.

LIVERWURST WITH BLACK TRUFFLE

Aquavit - (SCANDANAVIAN) www.aquavit.org A nice bar, but very modern and minimalist decor.  Marcus Samuelson (Food Network and Top Chef Master) refines scandanavian foods with picked fish, confits and game. Simple ingredients with huge explosions of flavor and finesse.  Also, try their variety of Aquavit's (infused spirit).  The horseradish is my favorite.

Rothmans - (STEAKHOUSE) www.rothmanssteakhouse.com  THE BEST steak in NYC.  Their use of quality meat which is truly aged (21 days) properly makes each cut of beef absolutely delicious! Don't forget the Hot Chili Tuna Tartare with Chipotle Mayonnaise.  Side DIshes of note are the sauteed onions (w/ demi-glace) and bacon asiago mashed potatoes.

CRAWL #4    (EAST VILLAGE)

Terroir  East Village- (WINE BAR)  www.wineisterroir.com "The Elitist Wine Bar for Everyone" is their motto and it's quite true.  Unique wines served and they openly will NOT serve certain wines based on their personal wine philosophy, but they have a great vibe. Start here with some cheese and charcuterie and a glass of one of their most highlighted grapes; Riesling.

Pata Negra - (SPANISH TAPAS) http://www.patanegratapas.com Named after the Jamon Iberico they offer at this tiny, cozy bar which offers delicious tapas and the ambiance reminds you of a rustic Spanish bodega.  The Lamb Meatballs are not to be missed and I encourage you to try all of the different types of Jamon Iberico they serve.  The "Pata Negra" is of true greatness.  It's truly like butter in your mouth.

JAMON IBERICO DE BELLOTA (Pata Negra)

Apiary - (NEW AMERICAN) - www.apiarynyc.com  Last stop where you have a full menu to choose from.  I highly recommend regarding Chef Scott Bryan's hamachi, crispy sweetbreads with romesco or his slow roasted chicken.  They offer tasting menus and a price friendly prix fixe for $35 for 3 courses on Sunday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursdays. A fun bar with great staff and cool, chic environment.
